Chapter Twelve

KRISTOF STARED AT THE empty shell of man in front of him and struggled to find any signs of Aidan’s vibrance, the sharp determined tongue that had had Kristof wanting to hurt the brat. Aidan should be scowling, resisting vigorously against the men holding him—men who should be sporting bruises from the strikes of a fighter—and spewing an angry tirade like he’d done once before. But Aidan wasn’t. He was too quiet... far too quiet. And Kristof didn’t like it one bit.

Why did Aidan look this way?

Why did it hurt to see the brat broken? Hadn’t he wanted to break Aidan himself anyway?

He snorted at the hypocritical nature of the anger flowing through his veins and yet as he took in Aidan’s broken form, the dark bags beneath his beautiful eyes that were devoid of their usual brightness, Kristof realised he couldn’t have done it. There was no way he could have stolen the smiles that lit up the brat’s face without regretting it worse than any of the decisions he’d made recently. To hurt Aidan until the brat looked like this would have destroyed Kristof himself. But someone had hurt Aidan and Kristof needed to know who.

His anguished confusion grew as Aidan stepped through the door of his apartment, kicked his shoes off, slipped off his jacket and headed for Kristof’s bedroom. Did Aidan even know where he was? Kristof moved quickly after him, snatching up the pieces of clothing Aidan peeled off as he walked and reached the bedroom just as the zombie-like Aidan crawled into Kristof’s bed and hugged his pillow tight.

It was all too much. The feelings Kristof had tried to bury rushed forward, crashing over him until Kristof sagged against the wall, fingers scrabbling at the surface as he fought to stay upright. His pain, regret and anger intensified as he listened to the heartbroken sobs that wracked Aidan’s body... and a sense of helplessness hit him, leaving Kristof uncertain of anything and everything.

He forced himself away from the room and dropped onto the couch in the living area. Grabbing his phone, Kristof called Alexis hoping that he might have some answers for him. Surely Aidan wasn’t like this when Kristof’s men grabbed him and yet their bruise free faces suggested otherwise.

“Boss? Do you need something?” Alexis answered.

“Yeah, I need information on Aidan’s current state. How long has been like this?”

“I’m not sure. The men we sent to collect him reckoned Aidan didn’t even register their presence or even realised what was happening.”

“I don’t think he understands that now.”

“Look no one thought to much about it other than he appeared distracted and took a few unwise risks with personal protection.... Wait they did note one thing they thought strange. Despite Aidan being in a relationship with Misaki, Misaki was never seen visiting.”

Kristof sighed, rubbed at his face and pushing back on the overwhelming tiredness that had snuck up on him. “I’ll contact Misaki and hope that he can shed light on this... someone has broken Aidan, destroyed him emotionally and as strange as it is to say, I don’t, fucking like it.
